Domino imprint on young minds to inspire them with science and technology

Year 4 students from Bar Hill Primary School had the exciting opportunity to visit their neighbours Domino Printing for a STEM outreach day with Cambridge LaunchPad. The programme, which is managed by Form the Future CIC aims to get young people passionate about STEM subjects.

Stella, Year 4 student at Bar Hill Primary School, said:

“It’s been really cool to visit a real-life workplace and do experiments with things they really use!“

Domino organised a series of hands-on activities to introduce the students to the science and technology behind industrial printing and how businesses improve their efficiency and environmental impact. These ranged from designing and refining sound amplifiers out of card and testing lightbulbs for energy efficiency, to making a ‘viscosity clock’ to time the perfect soft-boiled egg.

David Hawkins, Science Subject Leader at Bar Hill Primary School, said:

“This has been a fantastic opportunity for our pupils! Through exciting activities and interaction with scientists and engineers in a real-life context, the children have been given the chance to explore the knowledge and skills they need to inspire a life-long interest in STEM subjects.”

Hilary Wright, Group HR Director at Domino Printing, said:

“Here at Domino Printing Sciences we were delighted to host Y4 students from Bar Hill Primary school for their LaunchPad project day. It gave us a great opportunity to share some of the skills and knowledge of our engineers and chemists with young people and hopefully inspire them in their future career choices in the world of technology.”

The seven students who most impressed with their enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication were selected to attend a prize trip that will take place in the summer, alongside winning Year 4–6 students from other schools and colleges that are taking part in Cambridge LaunchPad.

Molly Askham, STEM Outreach Assistant from Form the Future CIC, said:

“Throughout the day, the students were working on a range of hands-on activities that let them explore their curiosity and develop excellent communication skills.  Events such as this one with Domino Printing, provide students with an engaging and exciting opportunity to explore the world of STEM. The great feedback that we have received from both teachers and students show how these project days can inspire young people to think about the possibilities around them.”
