Tech Futures - Cambridge Tech Week Illumina

Tech Futures 2025 Inspires Next Generation of Innovators at Cambridge Tech Week

Form the Future’s Tech Futures 2025, delivered in partnership with Cambridge Tech Week, gave sixth-form students from across Cambridgeshire a unique, three-day immersion into the world of technology and innovation.

From hands-on hackathons to masterclasses with leading professionals, the programme opened doors to future career pathways while showcasing the scale of opportunity within the region’s thriving tech sector.

Day One: AI, Data Science and Innovation Alley

The programme began with an exclusive session from experts at Arm, who introduced students to data science, machine learning and gesture recognition in AI. The morning masterclass was followed by an exploration of Innovation Alley at Cambridge Tech Week in the Guildhall, where students discovered more than 80 early-stage companies, scaleups and established tech leaders.

One Year 12 student reflected:
“It’s so interesting to learn how much of a role AI will play in the future, and how useful it can be.”

Day Two: Lessons from the Past, Inspiration for the Future

On day two, students explored the rapid evolution of technology through a special workshop with The Centre for Computing History. From iconic 80s and 90s machines to the rise of gaming, the session sparked ideas about where innovation might take us next. The buzz was such that even the BBC dropped in to cover the excitement.

Some students were also invited as guests of Anne Bailey, CEO of Form the Future, to attend Cambridge Tech Week’s main seminars – offering a glimpse into the conversations shaping the industry at a global level.

Day Three: Genomics and the Future of Healthcare

The final day saw the spotlight shift to Illumina, where students stepped into the role of junior genetic counsellors. Through case studies, they learned how to analyse pedigrees, understand dominant and recessive traits, and trace genetic conditions. The session ended with a panel discussion where Illumina professionals shared their own career journeys, bringing the human side of cutting-edge science to life.

HackEd: Young Innovators Rise to the Challenge

Running across the three days was HackEd Cambridge, delivered in collaboration with Tech Educators. Students worked in teams to develop AI-powered solutions to real-world challenges, with creativity, collaboration and technical skills on full display.

The winning team, Klarity, impressed the judges with their innovative approach – but every participant left with new skills, ideas and connections that will help shape their future.
