A Level and other Level 3 Vocational Qualifications (VTQs), such as BTECs, are typically released by sixth forms and colleges on this day and additionally students will find out if they’ve been accepted into their chosen universities through UCAS.
Results day can be a mix of excitement, nerves, and uncertainty. As a parent or carer, your support is vital in helping your young person navigate their options and emotions. Here’s how you can be there for them:
Be present and available, make time to be with your child when they receive their results—whether in person or virtually. Offer a calm, reassuring presence, whatever the outcome.
If applying to university, help them check UCAS. UCAS Hub updates around 8:15am. Support them in checking their university offers. If they haven’t met the conditions:
- They may be entered into Clearing – help them explore options calmly.
- Encourage them to research courses and universities and consider alternative plans
- Help them prepare questions and make calls to universities.
- Be ready to discuss practicalities like travel, accommodation, and finances.
- Individuals can apply at this stage too if they haven’t already done so, it is not too late to find a course.
For full details, refer to the Clearing 2025 guide.
Emotional Support
Stay calm and positive, your attitude sets the tone. Stay composed and optimistic, even if things don’t go as planned.
Listen without pressure and let them express how they feel. Avoid jumping to solutions – sometimes they just need to be heard.
Exploring Alternatives
Consider appeals, reviews of marking, and re-sits- if your young person feels their grades are unfair, help them understand the process for appeals or remarks, usually handled through the exams department at their sixth form or college.
Gap Year Options- A gap year can be a great opportunity to travel, work, or gain experience before deciding on next steps. Prospects offers a helpful guide with links to volunteering organisations and summer camps.
Apprenticeships and Training- explore apprenticeship vacancies which offer valuable experience and qualifications while earning.
Apprenticeships offer different levels – Level 3 and above can be excellent career starters. A good starting point is the Find an Apprenticeship service.
Our final thoughts
Whatever the outcome, your young person has achieved something significant. Be proud, be supportive, and help them reflect positively on their journey. Encourage them to enjoy their summer, celebrate with friends and family, and look ahead with confidence.
