Students tackle construction stereotypes with Morgan Sindall Construction

For the latest Cambridge LaunchPad project day, Year 4 students from Stapleford Community Primary School and Icknield Primary School visited Morgan Sindall Construction

The focus of the day was careers in the construction industry, to get students thinking about the different roles available that they may not have otherwise known.

Students were led by volunteers from Morgan Sindall Construction, who took them through a variety of tasks – from identifying common construction hazards, designing a school and building their own buildings from straws.

Importantly, the project day focused on breaking down some of the stereotypes that surround the construction industry, and myth busting common misconceptions – to show students that a career in construction is for everyone, and there are plenty of roles available that may interest them.

A student who attended the day said: “I have learnt that construction is not just for boys!”

Students were also able to work in teams with students from other schools, helping them to build their confidence, communication and teamworking skills.

Over the course of the day, students were observed on their participation, understanding, problem solving skills and teamwork. They were also marked on their presentation skills and how well they communicated with both peers and volunteers. The team who exemplified these skills will join Cambridge Launchpad for the end of year Award ceremony to be held in June.

Helen Clements, Community Investment Advisor at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Morgan Sindall Construction is passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers across the East of England and we hope that our support for Cambridge LaunchPad will help to inspire young people interested in STEM and educate them about the opportunities within our industry. It was great to see all of the students engaged in the various activities and to hear their feedback about how they want to come and work in the sector when they are old enough.”

Bethan Howe, Events Manager at Form the Future, said: “We had a great day at Morgan Sindall Construction with students from Icknield and Stapleford learning about construction. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and surprised me with their existing knowledge of this industry. At the end of the day, lots of students put up their hands to say they might consider a career in construction – what a success!”
