Results Day can be an emotional mix of excitement and anxiety for young people and their families. Whether waiting for GCSEs, A Levels, or Level 3 qualifications (such as BTECs, T Levels or the IB), decisions about next steps often need to be made quickly. Here’s how you can support your child.
Key Results Dates
- IB: 6 July 2026
- A Levels & Level 3 Qualifications: 13 August 2026
- GCSEs: 20 August 2026
On the Day
Stay calm and supportive. Practical help, like offering a lift or a quiet space to read results, can make a big difference. Remind your young person that results matter, but they don’t define their future.
Understanding Results
- GCSE: Grade 4 = pass, 5 = strong pass, 7–9 = high grades
- A Level: A*–E are passes
- Vocational: Distinction* (A), Distinction (A), Merit (C), Pass (D/E)
Lower A Level passes (D/E) still earn UCAS points but may limit university options. Students can consider resits either through school or as independent candidates, and most universities accept resits (always check course requirements, as courses such as medicine may not accept them).
If Plans Change
Results may be better, or different, than expected. Encourage your young person to stay positive and explore options, including:
- alternative courses or subjects
- apprenticeships
- foundation years
- gap years
Speak to school or college staff before considering appeals as results may go down as well as up!
For University Applicants
Students may confirm their place or enter Clearing, where many find courses that suit them even better. Encourage quick action and open-mindedness. (see UCAS website)
Support Available
Help is on hand from:
- school and college staff
- university admissions teams
Your role as a calm listener and guide is invaluable.
Other Considerations
- Gap years: defer or reapply later. A gap year can boost confidence and give space for measured career reassessment
- Apprenticeships: are a good alternative and offer the opportunity to earn while studying towards an accredited qualification
- Student finance & accommodation: act quickly once plans are confirmed to ensure that your young person accesses the best options
Looking Ahead
There is no single “right” path. With the right support, every young person can move forward confidently, whatever their results.
