How to Find Out About Careers Education and Guidance in Your Child’s School

Navigating the maze of careers education and guidance in schools can feel overwhelming for parents. However, understanding the resources and support available is crucial in helping your teenager make informed decisions about their future. Here are some practical steps to get you started:

1. Review the School’s Careers Policy

Start by exploring the school’s website. Most schools publish their careers policy online, outlining their approach to careers education, the programmes they offer, and how they align with the Gatsby Benchmarks – a framework of best practices for career education in schools. Look for sections on work experience opportunities, employer engagements, and alumni networks.

2. Engage with School Staff

The careers leader or coordinator in the school is your go-to person for detailed information. If you have any specific questions send an email to find out more information. You might want to find out more about career fairs, visits from industry professionals and any career assessment tools used to help students identify their strengths and interests.

3. Find out about Individual Careers Guidance

Gatsby Benchmark 8 requires that every secondary school student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a Careers Adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to Level 6 in Careers Guidance. Find out from your school (it should be mentioned on the school website) who the Careers Adviser is and how your child will be offered a meeting with them. Every student should have at least one such interview by the age of 16, and the opportunity for a further interview by the age of 18.

4. Attend Parent Information Evenings

Schools often hold parent information evenings focused on careers and further education. These events provide insights into the resources available, such as career workshops, college fairs, and apprenticeship talks. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions and network with other parents. There is often an information evening held in Year 11 which would focus on the options available after GCSEs, for example.

5. Utilise Online Resources

Many schools provide access to online career platforms like Unifrog or Morrisby. These platforms offer a wealth of information on different career paths, necessary qualifications, and useful labour market information about different industries. Ensure your child is utilising these resources and have a look at them together.

6. Encourage Work Experience and Volunteering

Practical experience is invaluable. Inquire about the school’s work experience program and encourage your child to participate. Volunteering and part-time jobs also provide insights into different career paths and help build essential skills.

7. Stay Informed about Further Education Options

Keep abreast of the different pathways available post-GCSEs and A-levels, including vocational courses, apprenticeships, and university degrees. Understanding the full spectrum of options will enable you to better support your child in making choices that align with their interests and career aspirations.

8. Explore External Support

Organisations like the National Careers Service and local careers hubs offer additional support and guidance. They provide information on job market trends, apprenticeships, and further education opportunities. Contact them directly for resources that can complement what the school offers.

By taking these steps, you can gain a comprehensive understanding of the career’s education and guidance available in your child’s school, ensuring they are well-equipped to make informed decisions about their future. Working together with the school, you can provide the support and encouragement your teenager needs to navigate the exciting journey ahead.
